The bicycle race will come through Mt. Baldy, Azusa, and Glendora.
Walnut and Diamond Bar fans of bicycle racing will get an up-close look at the sport when riders in the Amgen Tour of California heads to the San Gabriel Valley area for part of the race. Motorists also are being warned to brace for brief road closures in some Los Angeles County areas where the race will come through this weekend. The racers will ride through the mountains of Los Angeles County and finish Sunday on the streets of Beverly Hills, Hollywood and downtown L.A. Next Sunday, some L.A. streets may be thronged with fans, but road closures will not be lengthy as the bike race passes any given spot relatively quickly, organizers said. A public celebration of life for Junior Seau is slated for 6:30 p.m. Friday at Qualcomm Stadium. It will also be streamed online.
A public memorial service Friday for former San Diego Chargers player Junior Seau will be streamed live, it was announced. The celebation of life begins at 6:30 p.m. at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, and will be streamed on Chargers.com, according to a team news release. The event will allow San Diegans to join in a community-wide tribute to their native son who passed away May 2. The ceremony is free and open to the public. There is no charge for parking. The parking lot will open at 2 p.m. and the stadium gates at 4:30 p.m. There is no reserve seating and a large crowd is expected, so fans are urged to arrive early and carpool or take the Trolley. The Diamond Bar grad is one of 28 women chosen to train with the US Women's National Soccer Team as it prepares for this summer's games in England.
Diamond Bar High grad Alex Morgan's route to the Olympics will now run through New Jersey. She was one of 28 players chosen to participate in the US Women's National Soccer Team's training camp May 10-25 in Princeton, N.J. The camp is a precursor for pre-Olympic friendlies scheduled against China (May 27 in Chester, Pa.) and Canada (June 30 in Utah) before departing for the Olympics. “We had a very productive camp in Florida, but now we get to look forward to a game,” said coach Pia Sundhage in a US Soccer news release. “The practices and scrimmages in Florida were physical and mentally taxing, and that was the plan. Congratulations to the Diamond Bar High School Boys Golf Team, who earned the 2012 CIF-Southern Section Western Regional Championship. They won the title on Monday, May 7 at Sierra La Verne Country Club. The DBHS golfers and their scores are Dean Sakata, 69; Jason Chen, 70; Sahith Theegala, 74; Chris Nijthaworn, 75; Brian Fong, 77; and Jefferson Kao, 77. “The best part is we beat some of the top teams in the State!” said Coach Ty Watkins. The DBHS teamwill play on Thursday, May 10 in the CIF-SS TEAM FINALS at Rancho San Marcos Golf Course in Santa Barbara.

Diamond Bar, Diamond Ranch and Walnut High School track athletes race for the league title.
Several of the area's best high school track athletes took part in Thursday's Hacienda League track and field finals on May 3. The top performers in each event qualified to compete in the CIF Southern Section preliminaries scheduled for May 12 at various locations throughout the region. Thousands have their moment (and hours) in the sun Saturday at 54th annual Mt. SAC Relays.
A three-day meet with a Saturday climax. A web-streamed show seen by tens of thousands of people in more than 100 countries. A Walnut tradition. The Mt. SAC Relays concluded with meet records in the women's long jump by world champion Brittney Reese and a slightly over the allowable wind-aided 100-meter stunner of 9.85 seconds by Olympic sprint medalist Walter Dix. (See results here.) Disappointed was Mexican long jumper Luis Alberto Rivera, who celebrated after setting what he thought was a national record. But remeasurement found the mark a quarter-inch short. But he, like many other foreign nationals and American elites, will have their chance to shine again—in London for the 2012 Games or the Eugene Olympic Trials in late June. …

This year’s Mt. SAC Relays feature plenty of Olympic hopefuls as they prepare for the 2012 Summer Games in London.
On a fast track to London, a slew of Olympic hopefuls will first compete at the Mt. SAC Relays Thursday-Saturday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. Among the big-named athletes competing are several Americans that will represent the USA in London at the Olympic Games, July 27 through August 12. Olympic gold and silver medalist Jeremy Warner will compete in the men’s 400 meters, along with former U.S. champion Greg Nixon. As for top-ranked women, sprinters Allison Felix and Carmelita Jeter will be on the track, Jeter in the 100 and Felix in a relay. The cost is $74 per player.
Enrollment opens today for the city of Diamond Bar’s Youth Summer Baseball League. Kids between the ages of four to 11 can sign up. During the six week program, they will learn the basics of the game, from catching to hitting to running. Practice begins June 11, with games starting July 2 and ending in early August. The cost is $74 per person, which includes a t-shirt, hat, and trophy. During registration, parents can also sign up for a volunteer coach position.
