Suspect Opens Fire on Industry Sheriff's Deputies

Three people who had been in a stolen car were in custody today. Deputies say they were fired upon from inside the vehicle.

Three people who had been in a stolen car from which shots were fired at pursuing sheriff's deputies were in custody today following their arrests in Baldwin Park, authorities said. The car was spotted around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday by a member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Narcotics Strike Team, who determined it was reported stolen, said Sgt. Peter Gomez of the sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. The vehicle was followed until a marked patrol car from the sheriff's Industry Station arrived, at which time the chase began, he said. Teen Killed on 57 Freeway

The crash temporarily shut down several freeway lanes, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

An 18-year-old man was killed this morning when his motorcycle crashed on the Orange (57) Freeway in San Dimas, temporarily shutting down several freeway lanes, a California Highway Patrol officer said. The crash happened about 9:50 a.m. on the northbound 57 Freeway, just south of the Foothill (210) Freeway, CHP Officer Ed Jacobs said. A SIG alert was issued at 10 a.m. that was expected to last for about for about two hours while officers investigate the incident, California Highway Parol officials said. "The rider crashed his bike in lane Number 2 and was pronounced dead at the scene," Jacobs said. "I don't know yet if another vehicle was involved in the accident." Man Suspected of St. John Vianney Arson in Court Today

Gregory Yusuke Shiga, 34, was arrested this week after a year-long investigation.

A suspected arsonist accused of setting fire to St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Hacienda Heights in April 2011 and causing more than $6.5 million in damages is expected to be arraigned this afternoon, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced. Gregrory Yusuke Shiga, 34, has been charged with one count each of aggravated arson of a structure or forest, possession of flammable material, and second degree commercial burglary.  The Los Angeles man is set to appear in Department 4 of Citrus Superior Court in West Covina today to formally hear the charges against him.  His bail is recommended at $1 million. Police Search for a Killer

Police say a gunman killed in 18-year-old in nearby Pomona

An 18-year-old man was fatally shot in Pomona, authorities said today. Officers were sent to the 600 block of Davidson Lane in response to a shots-fired call about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter. Jonathan Marquez of Pomona died at the scene, Winter said. The circumstances of the shooting were under investigation. There were no immediate arrests, police said.

Search for Missing Boys Moves to Different Landfill

Investigators looking for two boys they suspect were killed by their father have begun to search an Irvine landfill. Shazer Fernando Limas is charged with the murders of his wife, 31-year-old Arlet Hernandez Contreras, and their two boys.

Orange detectives today used cadaver dogs to search another landfill for two boys believed murdered by their father, who's also charged with killing their mother. Shazer Fernando Limas, arrested May 3, is charged with the murders of his wife, 31-year-old Arlet Hernandez Contreras, and their two boys: year-old Fernando and 3-month-old Emmanuel, in the family's Orange apartment in the 3000 block of West Chapman Ave. Contreras' body was found April 25 dumped in La Puente but she was not positively identified until about a week later. A search of the Brea Landfill last week found no trace of the boys. Detectives learned that the trash haulers under contract to the apartment complex also took refuse to the Frank Bowerman Landfill in Irvine, …

Industry Deputies Search for Robber

The robber hit a wholesale food production business in the unincorporated Avocado Heights area near La Puente.

A wholesale food production business in the unincorporated Avocado Heights area near La Puente was robbed today, but no one was hurt, authorities said. The robbery at Rice Field Corp. in the 14000 block of East Valley Boulevard was reported by an employee around 1:30 a.m., said Lt. Richard Shear of the Los Angeles County sheriff's Industry Station. Deputies used a dog to search the business and its surroundings, Shear said. No arrests were reported. "It sounds like there was a delay in how long it took to report it," Shear said. There was no immediate word on what property was taken.

Sheriff's Recruit's Life is Saved by Deputy and Fellow Recruits

A 50-year-old recruit stopped breathing during a routine training run.

A Sheriff’s Recruit Training officer with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and two recruits helped save the life of a 50-year-old recruit who stopped breathing during a training run. Sheriff’s officials said the incident began while training officer Jesus Cabadas followed a Sheriff’s Academy class on a three-mile fitness run from the Sheriff's Academy parking lot through the unincorporated community of Whittier at 7:30 a.m., Friday. The department provides law-enforcement services to Diamond Bar and Walnut. The recruits were in the sixth week of an 18-week training academy and physical fitness course, officials said. Assistant Fire Chief Dave Stone to Serve Walnut, Diamond Bar

Stone urged residents to visit stations today for Fire Service Day.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department, which serves the cities of Walnut and Diamond Bar, recently reorganized and now the local area has a new leader at the helm. Assistant Fire Chief Dave Stone will now cover the division that includes Walnut and Diamond Bar.  Deputy Chief Angel Montoya, who heads the east region, introduced the 29-year veteran last week at the Walnut City Council meeting.  Montoya said that Stone has had a varied career, serving as a battalion chief and a member of various management teams such as urban search and rescue.  Stone also was part of crews that responded to Hurricane Katrina, the earthquake in Haiti, and the tsunami in Japan. Cal Poly Pomona Students Robbed On Campus

Campus authorities are warning that two students have been robbed of their cell phones.

Two Cal Poly Pomona students were robbed of cell phones in separate incidents at the school, authorities said today. The crimes occurred on April 30 and May 3, according to the college's public affairs office. Authorities circulated a composite drawing of the suspect, described as a white man in his 20s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall with a thin build and blond hair. On the afternoon of May 3, the suspect approached a student who was walking through Parking Lot K toward the bus stop at Temple Avenue and South Campus Drive. After demanding to see the student's cell phone, the man punched him in the face, took the phone and ran.
