A Walnut man stands accused of causing a crash that killed a 23-year-old Diamond Bar resident Sunday.
As members of the Armenian community mourn the loss of one of its young, the man accused of killing him prepares to go before a judge to answer for the crime. California Highway Patrol officers say Sheng-Ting Shih, 32, of Walnut, slammed his 2012 BMW into 23-year-old George Derkrikorian’s 2001 Ford early Sunday in the eastbound lanes of Highway 60 west of Brea Canyon Road in Diamond Bar. Derkrikorian had been traveling behind slow traffic when Shih sped up and slammed into his vehicle, CHP officials said. Shih is scheduled to appear in Pomona Superior Court at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. He is facing a felony charge connected to his DUI arrest, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s records. Derkrikorian died at the scene of the crash. Shih’s …

Former Diamond Bar resident Suzann Whitson went out of her way to serve her community
Suzann Whitson was known around Diamond Bar as a Girl Scout leader, PTA member, and teacher’s and instructional aide, and she shared her appreciation of education and community with her family. “My mom taught us all to love reading, to be good community volunteers, and to be caring parents without hovering over our children,” said daughter Aimee Cueto of Glendale. “Her sister described her as being a constant presence, always at her side, making her stronger. I feel like that holds true with everyone she loved.” Whitson, a former longtime resident of Diamond Bar, died September 20 in Glendale. She was 78. Whitson was born and raised in Los Angeles, and moved to Diamond Bar in the mid-1960s with her husband, Boyd Richard “Dick” Whitson. …

Helen's husband Gene and daughter Karen remember Helen Doss as a devoted teacher, conservative activist, and caring mother and wife.
At 12:45 a.m. on the morning of April 11 Helen Doss, a Diamond Bar resident since 1971, slid quietly from life after a brief but valiant battle against cancer. Born in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma, Helen celebrated her third birthday in California. One of four children, she attended public schools in the San Jose area. Helen was the only of her siblings to attend college and against social norms for women of the time, she wanted to be a doctor. Helen satisfied her yearning for knowledge and a career through studying to be a teacher. In 1959, she graduated with a B.A. from San Jose State College, followed by graduate work at San Francisco State College and UCLA. For pleasure, she sneaked reads of medical books. The daughter of a minister, Helen was …

Long-time resident Al Rumpilla was deeply concerned about Diamond Bar's incorporation — in strong opposition — but when the city formed Al was as engaged as ever, revising his goal to make Diamond Bar "the best city in the world."
“Dad was a huge patriot. He believed a man’s handshake should be as good as a contract. He believed to have courage and be honest in all you do.” – Dean Rumpilla The son of a World War II Marine who was buried at sea after dying in on the beaches of Iwo Jima, Albert D. Rumpilla never knew his own father’s embrace, nor had a marked place to visit him. Years later, after graduating from La Puente High School in 1962, "Al" followed in his father's footsteps by entering the U.S. Marine Corps. Al's mother, a nurse, had moved frequently in the early years and had supported the family on the frugal finances of a single mom until she remarried. After serving as a Marine, Al took up work as a truck driver and settled in the open suburban …

Diamond Bar resident Sherry Arnold died in a tragic house fire last week and is remembered by family and friends as a loving parent, grandparent, and companion.
Leslie Arnold did not know the woman storming off of the production floor at Sweinhart Electric, but he watched her leave. It was 1973 and nearly 20 years before the two would meet again, before they would fall in love, before they would get married. Leslie — who goes by "Les" — was working at Sweinhart's. Sherry came in for an interview. "They wanted her to type out a manual on a little corner desk on the production floor," Les said. Sherry was offered the job but was less than pleased with the interviewer. "So, she took off and left," Les said. Sherry went to work for Atlas Energy soon after, and Les followed, by chance, 20 years later, when the two finally met. "It just started off as friends," Les said. At that time, Les had no idea …
