Suspect Opens Fire on Industry Sheriff's Deputies

Three people who had been in a stolen car were in custody today. Deputies say they were fired upon from inside the vehicle.

Three people who had been in a stolen car from which shots were fired at pursuing sheriff's deputies were in custody today following their arrests in Baldwin Park, authorities said. The car was spotted around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday by a member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Narcotics Strike Team, who determined it was reported stolen, said Sgt. Peter Gomez of the sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. The vehicle was followed until a marked patrol car from the sheriff's Industry Station arrived, at which time the chase began, he said. During the pursuit, rounds were fired at deputies through the front windshield of the car, according to Gomez, who said deputies did not return fire. Teen Killed on 57 Freeway

The crash temporarily shut down several freeway lanes, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

An 18-year-old man was killed this morning when his motorcycle crashed on the Orange (57) Freeway in San Dimas, temporarily shutting down several freeway lanes, a California Highway Patrol officer said. The crash happened about 9:50 a.m. on the northbound 57 Freeway, just south of the Foothill (210) Freeway, CHP Officer Ed Jacobs said. A SIG alert was issued at 10 a.m. that was expected to last for about for about two hours while officers investigate the incident, California Highway Parol officials said. "The rider crashed his bike in lane Number 2 and was pronounced dead at the scene," Jacobs said. "I don't know yet if another vehicle was involved in the accident." DA Cooley Says Assessor Should Resign

Los Angeles County Assessor John Noguez' office is under investigation.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley said today County Assessor John Noguez -- whose office is the target of a corruption probe -- should resign. When asked if he had concerns about Noguez continuing to work as assessor, Cooley told reporters, "Yes, I do. I don't think he should be there." "In my view, he should resign in light of everything that's come out publicly and because it's interfering with the discharge of that importantoffice's critical functions," the county's top prosecutor said. "And I think that a change over there is entirely appropriate so that some changes in personnel and other reforms can be implemented to restore the integrity of the organization." Local College Students Protest Fee Hikes, Fewer Classes

The Associated Students led a rally and march on the campus Wednesday to voice concerns about education funding cuts and tuition hikes.

Decrying the increase in fees and the cuts to classes, Mt. SAC students Wednesday gathered in protest in the quad outside of the library. Around 50 students rallied, holding up signs lamenting the state budget crisis.  The group later marched across campus. The protest follows Gov. Jerry Brown’s release Monday of his May budget revise, which cuts $8.3 billion in an effort to bridge a nearly $16 billion shortfall. Brown did not call for additional cuts to community colleges in his revise this time around, but his plan does call for slashing education spending if his proposed tax initiative does not get voter approval in November. Man Suspected of St. John Vianney Arson in Court Today

Gregory Yusuke Shiga, 34, was arrested this week after a year-long investigation.

A suspected arsonist accused of setting fire to St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Hacienda Heights in April 2011 and causing more than $6.5 million in damages is expected to be arraigned this afternoon, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced. Gregrory Yusuke Shiga, 34, has been charged with one count each of aggravated arson of a structure or forest, possession of flammable material, and second degree commercial burglary.  The Los Angeles man is set to appear in Department 4 of Citrus Superior Court in West Covina today to formally hear the charges against him.  His bail is recommended at $1 million. The Mt. San Antonio College Randall Planetarium will present a special program to celebrate the annular solar eclipse that will include observations with the planetarium’s solar telescopes on Sunday, May 20, 4 to 8 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. The annular solar eclipse on May 20 will be the first central eclipse of the 21st century in the continental United States and the first since May 10, 1994. The next solar eclipse is October 2023, according to NASA. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and sun, totally or partially obscuring the image of the sun. Police Search for a Killer

Police say a gunman killed in 18-year-old in nearby Pomona

An 18-year-old man was fatally shot in Pomona, authorities said today. Officers were sent to the 600 block of Davidson Lane in response to a shots-fired call about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter. Jonathan Marquez of Pomona died at the scene, Winter said. The circumstances of the shooting were under investigation. There were no immediate arrests, police said.

Cal Poly Students Pepper Mayor with Questions

About 25 students had the opportunity to interview Mayor Chang at the end of Tuesday's City Council meeting.

Students with Cal Poly Pomona’s Reporting 2 class attended Tuesday’s Diamond Bar City Council meeting armed with a full list of questions for Mayor Ling Ling Chang. “At this level, they go out and cover live events,” said Doug Spoon, instructor and faculty adviser for the Poly Post. About 25 students had the opportunity to interview Mayor Chang at the end of the meeting. They were to stick to what was addressed at the meeting. The students asked about the city’s budget, the recent birthday celebration and the city’s use of social media.
