DA Cooley Says Assessor Should Resign

Los Angeles County Assessor John Noguez' office is under investigation.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley said today County Assessor John Noguez -- whose office is the target of a corruption probe -- should resign. When asked if he had concerns about Noguez continuing to work as assessor, Cooley told reporters, "Yes, I do. I don't think he should be there." "In my view, he should resign in light of everything that's come out publicly and because it's interfering with the discharge of that importantoffice's critical functions," the county's top prosecutor said. "And I think that a change over there is entirely appropriate so that some changes in personnel and other reforms can be implemented to restore the integrity of the organization." A spokesman for the Assessor's Office referred inquiries …

A balanced budget with a $55,000 general fund reserve was presented to the council.

The study session, held before the council meeting, gave the council a peek inside the budget that City Manager James DeStefano said the staff has been pouring over for several months. A balanced budget with a $55,000 general fund reserve was presented to the council. Huff Fires Back at Brown Budget Proposal

The state's Republican leader said they had been working to close the gap, but were not getting support from the Democrats.

State Senator Bob Huff issued an “I told you so” Monday following the release of Governor Jerry Brown’s revised state budget, which cuts $8.3 billion in an effort to close a $15.7 billion deficit. Huff pointed out that Democrats had the chance to avoid a deficit, but failed to act. “Unfortunately, the Governor’s increased budget deficit was predictable,” said Huff, the Senate Republican Leader. “Senate Republicans have consistently raised concerns that last year’s majority vote budget relied on too many phony spending reductions, other irresponsible revenue assumptions, and gimmicks. As state revenues have been increasing, total spending has also increased by $20 billion since the 2007-08 state budget.” In a YouTube video posted Saturday, …

Diamond Bar continues to define its animal control services guidelines, much of which had not been changed since the city’s incorporation. On Tuesday, City Councilmembers will decide if they want to amend the Municipal Code giving the director for animal control services, in this case the Inland Valley Humane Society, the authority to issue citations for animal code violations. ASPCA officers have been enforcing regulations, if passed, it will be codified, officials said. “Much of the City’s Animal Code was carried over from the County of Los Angeles upon incorporation and has remained largely unchanged since 1989,” according to city staff. Congressman Pushes to Halt No Child Left Behind Testing Provisions

Congressman Joe Baca has introduced legislation in the House of Representatives that could place a moratorium on the testing provisions in the No Child Left Behind Act.

A day after Walnut Unified’s schools were ranked among the top performing schools in the state, Congressman Joe Baca introduced legislation in the House of Representatives that could place a moratorium on the testing provisions in the No Child Left Behind Act that governs the school assessment standards across the country. The Save Our Schools Act or S.O.S., would amend the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to remove all mandated testing provisions, according to news release. Baca (R-Rialto) said he hopes to free school districts and teachers from the “teaching to the test culture” and ending an inequitable system that punishes, instead of assists, those schools and students in the most dire need. “Since its enactment in 2002, the No …
