Death Penalty Repeal Qualifies for November Ballot

The initiative would replaced the death penalty in California with life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

An initiative that would replace the death penalty in California with life imprisonment without the possibility of parole has qualified for the November ballot, Secretary of State Debra Bowen announced Monday. What backers have dubbed as the Savings Accountability and Full Enforcement California Act exceeded the 555,236 projected valid signatures need to quality for the ballot by the random sampling method of verifying signatures, Bowen said. The measure required 504,760 valid signatures from registered voters -- 5 percent of the total votes cast in the 2010 gubernatorial election -- to qualify for the ballot. Monday was the deadline for election officials in California's 58 counties to submit their signature counts to the Secretary of …

Candidate for 39th District Claims Ed Royce Attended "Hate Rally" Last Year

Jay Chen, a Hacienda-La Puente school board president and small business owner running for the 39th Congressional District covering Diamond Bar, Walnut and Fullerton, made the claims against Royce, his Republican opponent and longtime congressman.

Jay Chen, the Democratic candidate campaigning for the newly drawn 39th District's House of Representatives seat this year, claimed his Republican opponent Ed Royce attended a "hate rally" aimed at an Islamic fundraising group in Yorba Linda last year. In a phone interview, Chen also alleged that Royce, a 20-year veteran in the House and representative from the former 40th District covering parts of north and central Orange County, made comments at that rally rejecting multiculturalism in the United States.  "We want to let voters know who he is, because that's just not going to fly in a district that is 30 percent Latino, 30 percent Asian. We can't have that kind of representative," Chen said. "He's made comments about wanting all federal…

Jay Chen is a compulsive liar. While he was running for his current position as HLPUSD School Board President, he repeatedly stated to constituents and his opponents that he would not stand for election for Congress. This man cannot be trusted. I can't trust him as far as I can throw him. He also shows no understanding of the current problems faced by our country and offers no REAL solutions. He'…   more ›

Knabe to Run Unopposed in Primary

Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, who represents Diamond Bar as part of his Fourth District, will not have a challenger in the June 5 primary.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, who is seeking a fifth term, will have no re-election challengers in the June 5 primary contest for his Fourth District seat. Neither will Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas in the race for the Second District seat. Though Antonio Alvarez—one of nine candidates who ran against Ridley-Thomas in 2008 election—filed initial paperwork to run for office in February, he never followed through, leaving former Los Angeles City Councilman Ridley-Thomas unchallenged. Supervisor Michael Antonovich—who has held the Fifth District seat since 1980—will run against Palmdale business owner Raj Pal Kahlon. The primary election will be held June 5. The elections for supervisor are nonpartisan—candidates do not run on a …

Partisan Gridlock Sparks Congressional Hopeful's Run

Jay Chen, a Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District Board Member, is running for the 39th Congressional District.

Jay Chen saw a bit of the same sort of partisan rancor on the local level that he feels characterizes Washington politics. In 2010, the Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District Board Member spearheaded an effort to introduce Mandarin language classes at Cedarlane Middle School.  That move sparked opposition from some over the materials being funded by the Chinese government, led to a failed attempt to recall him, and prompted an appearance on “The Daily Show.”  The Democratic challenger for the newly formed 39th Congressional District called the reaction extremist and said much of the opposition came from Tea Party members. “We have to revamp the education system so that it responds to the demands of the 21st Century,” the 34-year-old …

Councilmember King, get your facts straight. The School District didn't hire anyone from China to teach Chinese. They didn't need to because there are dozens of young qualified teachers, many of which speak Mandarin and are born in the US that the district can choose from. Plus, speak for your own district, the last I heard, Walnut Valley is issuing pink slips to teachers because the school board…   more ›

Filing for June Election Begins Today

In Los Angeles County, the ballot will include races for District Attorney and three seats on the Board of Supervisors, including Don Knabe's.

The filing period begins today for the June primary election, the first under the "top two" system. Under terms of Proposition 14, approved by voters in the June 2010 primary, all candidates running for congressional, legislative and state constitutional offices, regardless of party, will appear on a single ballot. The top two finishers will advance to the November general election. Proposition 14 also gives candidates the right to decline to have their party stated on the ballot. In Los Angeles County, the ballot will include races for District Attorney, where incumbent Steve Cooley has said he will not run for re-election; seats on the Board of Supervisors held by Mike Antonovich, Don Knabe and Mark Ridley-Thomas; Superior Court …

LA County Seeks Public's Input on Voting System

The county plans to revamp its aging voting system and wants the public to offer suggested fixes.

LOS ANGELES - Officials reached out to the public this week to help redesign the county's aging voting system. Anyone interested in the election process can weigh in by posting ideas at www.openideo.com/open/voting/brief.html. In the initial "inspiration" phase of the project, participants are asked to share stories about their election experiences, their view of democracy and news and insights about the voting process. In the next phase, which will begin in 20 days, participants will use those ideas to answer the question, "How might we design an accessible election experience for everyone?" Later phases include feedback on concepts, refinements and a final evaluation. Winning concepts will be announced March 22.    The challenge is being…

One Day Brings Major Political Changes for Loma Linda/Redlands

A congressional district in limbo suddenly sees a flurry of news. UPDATE: A typo in Mayor Pete Aguilar's quote originally published with the story has been corrected.

Over the course of just a few hours Thursday, an Inland Empire congressional district that had been in limbo for several months found out it was the subject of major changes. Early Thursday morning, Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar announced he would run for California’s 31st Congressional District. About an hour later, Aguilar said he learned of Congressman Jerry Lewis’ (R-Redlands) announcement that will not seek re-election after more than three decades in office. Hours after that, Congressman Gary Miller (R-Diamond Bar) announced he was running for re-election and wanted Lewis’ averting a face off him and fellow Republican Congressman Ed Royce for the newly formed 39th District. The activity is the first since a stream of opposition voiced …

Congressman Gary Miller looks to Replace Lewis

Miller currently serves the 42nd district.

Congressman Gary Miller has announced he will run for the 31st Congressional District. The seat serves the cities of Loma Linda and Redlands. The run for the 31st District will keep Miller from facing off against fellow Republican Congressman Ed Royce. The districts the two men serve were altered during the redistricting process, turning the colleagues into rivals for the newly formed 39th Congressional District.  The 39th District includes Diamond Bar and Walnut. Miller's announcement follows news that Congressman Jerry Lewis will not seek re-election. The following was released today: "Today, Congressman Jerry Lewis (R-Redlands) announced his retirement after 17 terms in Congress.  His retirement means California’s 31st District will …
