Whitney Houston Dead at 48

The singer was pronounced dead shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

Beverly Hills Police Department spokesman Lt. Mark Rosen confirmed that Whitney Houston was pronounced dead at about 3:55 p.m. at the Beverly Hilton hotel. He said emergency personnel responded to a call from the hotel at 3:43 p.m. and began resuscitation efforts on Houston upon arrival, but were unable to revive her. There are reportedly no signs of foul play.

Pop star Whitney Houston died today at the age of 48.

Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, confirmed the death of the singer Saturday, but did not reveal how or where the singer had died.

According to the Los Angeles Times and the website TMZ, Houston died at the Beverly Hilton hotel. TMZ published a photograph taken Saturday of a Beverly Hills police crime lab vehicle outside the hotel. The Hilton is hosting a pre-Grammy party Saturday evening.

Houston's death comes one day before the 54th annual Grammy Awards, which are being held at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. A six-time Grammy winner herself, Houston reigned over the pop charts in the 1980s and 1990s with hits like How Will I Know, Saving All My Love for You and I Will Always Love You. She also crossed over into acting with starring roles in The BodyguardWaiting to Exhale and The Preacher's Wife.

One of the world's best-selling artists, Houston's career and strong voice suffered during a tumultuous marriage to R&B singer Bobby Brown that lasted from 1992-2007. The couple reportedly battled drug and alcohol addictions. They had one child together, daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, who was born in 1993.

Very sad that she has passes away! She was a very talented singer, but it is sad when people want to try to assume how she died! Don't be so quick to judge, just because of her past!! R.I.P WHITNEY, My prayers are with you and your family

It is sad that such a talent had to resort to drugs in the first place and waste the gift God gave her, I am not commenting on the cause of her death just referring to her past history. I am sorry for her passing and offer my condolences to her family. I do have a question for the publishers, what makes this local news was she from this area? And to Megan, you were right the first time it is "past"

Hi Jason, our reason for publishing was to give our local audience a chance to discuss among other locals in a platform they are already comfortable with. She was an icon. But you are right, I do not believe there is any local connection.

Not that it matters what I think…but….I’m feeling the same way about the reaction to Whitney Houston’s death that I did to Amy Winehouse’s. While we don’t yet know whether alcohol and/or drugs played a direct part in Ms. Houston’s death, we DO know that they played a major role in her life. She was an addict! And when alcohol and drugs play a major role in someone’s life, they usually die. Direct cause. Indirect cause. Remote cause. Doesn’t matter. A CAUSE! Of course it’s sad and tragic when someone dies of the disease of alcoholism and addiction. But Ms. Houston’s death is no more tragic than the deaths of hundreds of thousands of other alcoholics and addicts around the world, dozens of whom were my friends. Ms. Houston’s fans posted their condolences and feelings and her songs last night and today on Facebook. Its cathartic. But its not about US. It’s about the still suffering alcoholic/addict. Hopefully at least one will looks at Ms. Houston’s death as a “this too can happen to me”.

(JJ: You're joking of course)

Amazing comments....and nearly all speculation since we have no idea what happened except for rumours and innuendo. Addiction is a disease, not a choice and not a crime. JJ, news flash....closing the border will do nothing to slow down drugs because one has nothing to do with the other......too bad Mexico didn't close THIER border prior to 1848 and keep people like you OUT of Mexico which is where you happen to be sitting my dear. Misty...people pass away, we all have a past to remember, and we are grateful that Whitney Houston passed this way...does that help clarify? And Ben, I am Type A and never turn to stuff to calm down, so much for that theory.

@Charli — Nonsense. We can argue all you want over whether or not addiction is a disease, but either way it certainly stems from choices. I have never chosen to smoke crack, and amazingly I haven't ended up with an involuntary crack 'disease' (addiction) that didn't involve a choice on my part. Who knows, perhaps I am predisposed to being a crack addict, but guess what: my CHOICE to never do it is why I am not one. And every crack addict's CHOICE to smoke crack is what led to their addiction. They CHOSE. Taking a drink, using drugs, picking up a cigarette... all these are choices, and no amount of excuse making will change that.

Ty Charli. You said it better than I. I guess JJ and Ben didn't get my sarcasm. I AM/ was type A and DID turn to it. But one had nothing to do with the other. I have a disease that has been in remission for 8 years. And no I'm not cool.

So sad we are all so quick to pass judgement. Although addiction may have been the cause of Whitney's death, we shouldn't draw conclusions. Addiction runs in my family, so I have seen first hand the horrible results. It hurts those who are not addicts to hear others speak ill of those who are afflicted. Can't we just be sympathetic toward Whitney's loved ones, remember her beautiful voice, and what she contributed while here on earth. We were all blessed by her music.

Tony you seem to have quite a bit of knowledge on the topic and i agree with what you have said. The type A comment, I had to laugh at from Ben, because I am a type A. They people who are naturally driven to do things rather than not. Hence "naturally". I think now i said "think", nothing to back it... that type A's would be less productive less driven if they were to use some that other types use to become driven or motivational which deters type A's from wanting to, well it does me anyway. For instance i cant watch tv because its too boring and i feel unproductive if i do. thats just my opinion,. whitney houston is just a person like anyone else she is no different from me or you, its very sad that she was so young, and my heart goes out to her child. i lost my mother to cancer and she was 52, there are days i still need my mom. and for that i am sad that her daughter being so young will endure that pain.

on the topic of addiction, it leads to the brain and the grey matter which is our instant gratification, there was a study on the brain and people who are prone to addiction have more activity in their area of instant pleasure, such as over eaters, drug users, and smokers, so its now thought to not be just a cjoice, however a brain function that works against you. which makes more sense then wanting to believe someone chooses to destroy their self
